India is numbered among those nations who have the highest population living in extreme poverty. Nigeria has the largest number of people with 86.9 million. India is second with 71.5 million. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is third with 60.9 million.
According to The Swiss Bank, however, there are more than 343,000 millionaires in India. From mid-2017 to mid-2018, that number had icreased by 7,300. Still, more than 91% of the adult population have wealth below $10,000.
These extremes are due in large measure to the caste system which still plagues the country.
