Newspapers in the state of Jharkhand recently included propaganda against Christians which grossly exaggerated the response of Ghandi to John Mott, an American Evangelist. His statements were taken out of their context spoken on November 12, 1936. In the same conversation, Ghandi asked, “Would you, Dr. Mott, preach the Gospel to a cow? Well, some of the untouchables are worse than cows in understanding.”
In his statement, Ghandi questioned the effort of missionaries to make converts of the lowest castes. We do remember from Scripture, however, that “the common people heard Him gladly.”
We will further add that though we have seen many from the low castes turn to Christ, we have also seen many from the higher castes place their faith in Jesus.
